for the record
Historically, it was the shepherds who held the secrets of distillation, and we still find today old ovens bearing witness to this period, used to burn wood and recover the oil. This practice traditionally accompanied the breeding of sheep and goats, the shepherds using cade oil to protect their animals from the sun and insects, before noting its effectiveness and its many protective virtues, and adopting it for themselves, in particular to protect their face and hands from the wind and the sun.
Cade oil, formerly nicknamed 'black gold', is obtained by pyrolysis; that is to say, the cade wood is burned in an oven, the smoke released is made to rise through a conduit which is cooled in a cold water bath so that it, through a condensation process, liquefies. This liquid is then collected in a decantation tank, where the water and oil separate naturally thanks to their difference in density, thus giving cade oil.
For cade essential oil, the process is somewhat different, since it involves a process of hydro distillation, that is, steam distillation of the cade wood, allowing both the essential oil and the cade hydrosol to be obtained.
Did you know?
The Oxycèdre Juniper, or Cade by its Occitan name, is a small tree emblematic of Provence, characteristic of the scrubland landscape, which is found on the coasts of the Mediterranean basin.
It is distinguished from its cousin the common juniper by the two white stripes which appear on its thorns and make it immediately recognizable.
The Cévennes Distillery
The Distillerie des Cévennes is today the only one in Europe which continues to perpetuate this ancestral tradition by producing Cade oil and essential oil.
Located in the heart of Hérault where you can hear crickets singing all year round, the Distillery practices sustainable harvesting and uses Cade wood from the surrounding scrubland, often from forest felling, in order to preserve local vegetation.
It is part of an active approach to preserving the environment, by offering products mainly composed of ingredients of natural origin, with fully recyclable packaging.
Combining tradition and modern techniques, the Distillerie des Cévennes has equipped itself with a double distillation system, which allows, by removing the heavy molecules from the cade oil, to obtain a clearer and less odorous oil, while retaining the same active ingredients, in order to obtain an even purer product: fine Cade oil.
